    South Africa: Kwazulu-Natal: Colenso
Zingela is a picturesque tented camp situated on the banks of the Tugela River in the heart of the Thukela Biosphere reserve in KwaZulu Natal. Whether you are with us for an adventure-filled holiday, conference or team building session, or just to relax in the special beauty of our area, the magic of Zingela assures you of a special and memorable stay. Accommodation: Established in 1984, the stone and tented camp is tucked away on the banks of the mighty Tugela. The sound of the water lulls you to sleep and the call of the mischievous Mocking Chat wakes you in the morning. There is comfortable tented accommodation for 50 guests. Five of the tents are en-suite while the balance share three toilets and three showers. We pride ourselves on first class campfire cuisine and most meals are served in front of the fire in our thatched boma or under the stars. The bar stocks a wide range of refreshments, but please let us know of any special requirements as there is no cafe around the corner! White Water Rafting: The major summer activity is white-water rafting, and the most exciting time to do this is between November and May. The 30km stretch of river known as the canyon provides some of the most thrilling white water in the country. The South African leg of the Camel White-Water Challenge took place at Zingela and the venue received rave reviews from participants and organisers. A wide choice of river-rafting packages is available - from half a day to four days on the river. One man Kayaks, two man crocs and eight man rafts are used on the river, in accordance with water levels and the groups abilities. Safety is a priority, and all our guides are trained by SARA. No previous rafting experience is necessary. Abseiling: The rugged cliffs overlooking the Tugela canyon provide dizzying abseil sites. Face your fear or watch other participants step over the edge! Experienced guides are there to provide reassurance and to ensure complete safety. 4X4 and Horse Rides: Get seriously off the beaten track and make use of our rugged 4X4 tracks. Instructors available on request. Alternatively, make a day of it, take a picnic lunch and ride into Zingela on horseback. An added bonus is that you will be travelling through prime game country. Leisure: For those not interested in adventure activities, the camp is ideally suited for guided walks, gameviewing, birding, fishing or merely sitting in the shade of a thorn tree with a good book.

During colder weather, keep warm and relax in front of big, open log fires or keep cool lazing around the pool and be soothed by the sounds of nature. Let Pat's excellent homestyle cooking and the fresh country air exhilarate your senses and remind you just how good a getaway can really be. Ravenswyke Country House is a homestyle and secure B & B. Enjoy dinner, bed and breakfast and genuine friendly family service. Lunch can be provided at an additional cost, and picnic lunches can be arranged on request. This idyllic location has so much to offer. Deciding on how to spend your day may not be easy with a veritable smorgasbord of choices at hand! Perhaps a stroll around the beautiful private gardens is about as energetic as you'd like to get? Or waking to the soulful call of the Fish Eagle may inspire some bird watching. Birdlife is abundant in the area and Peter is very knowledgeable. This area is home to several endangered species whose delicate existence we proudly protect. We're honoured that the majestic Crowned Crane is one such bird that calls our area home. A large flock of Crowned Cranes may be viewed on a neighbouring farm. Go a little further afield and take a tour to see two other rare birds, the little Blue Swallow in the Ixopo area and the Cape Parrot in the Creighton area. If game watching is your passion, then a glimpse of the highly endangered Oribi right on the property will be a thrill. Other small game, including Rietbuck may be seen. A tranquil country walk is an ideal way to observe both birdlife and game. Complimentary night drives to view game are available on request. If indigenous culture takes your interest, rural guided tours can be arranged, including picnic lunches. Meet some of the friendly local people, take home a beaded Zulu love letter to someone special or simply enjoy the rustic charm of the area. A cultural expedition may also lure you to some local bushman paintings. These paintings are hundreds of years old and are testament to a very early people and way of life in Southern Africa. The picturesque landscape will not disappoint if it's scenic wonders that take your fancy. The Drakensberg Mountains are visible from the house and nearby Umtwalumi Falls are breathtaking in the wet season. You can also discover more of the countryside described in 'Cry, the Beloved Country' by taking a trip on the Alan Paton train. Natural therapy in the form of fishing is also available. A fishing rod in hand and only the buzz of a lazy dragonfly for company can be very therapeutic for frayed nerves. Both bass and trout fishing are available at an additional cost per rod. This is the perfect opportunity to catch your own dinner as our chef is happy to prepare your fish for you. A golf course is situated half an hours' drive away.
