Selous Safari Camp

Selous Game Reserve, The Great Selous:
The Selous Game Reserve is the largest protected wilderness reserve in Africa. Named after the legendary 19th century explorer and hunter Frederick Courteney Selous, the reserve was founded by the German colonial administration in 1905. It was later expanded to include traditional elephant migration routes and accommodate the vast herds of buffalo that roam this remote, untouched corner of Africa. Boat Rides, Game Drives, Walking, Game Watching, Fishing, Swimming Pool. The Selous Safari Camp, on the banks of the Rufiji River, is designed to blend in with the spectacular natural scenery in what is one of the most photogenic areas of the Selous Game Reserve. Each of the twelve safari tents is on its own raised timber platform, affording guests an unmatched experience of the African bush. Has en suite bathroom and an open-air shower. And the pool is a great place to cool off in the heat of the day. Few other names evoke the romance, mystique and spiritual delight of the African bush as the Selous Game Reserve does. Embracing 54,000 square kilometers of south-western Tanzania, it is the largest protected wilderness reserve on the continent, three times larger than the Serengeti and twice the size of Belgium. The sheer diversity of the landscape - from hot volcanic springs, placid lagoons and the many channels from the Great Ruaha and Rufiji Rivers which bisect the reserve - makes the Selous a unique area in which to observe the full panoply of African wildlife. Most of Africa?s mammal species, from the largest to the smallest to the rarest, thrive here. In addition there are some 440 species of birds and more than 2,000 recorded varieties of plants (with many more still to be discovered.) The camp has the prime position at the centre of the unique riverine and lake complex, with the highest concentration of African wildlife and myriad birdlife. The spacious tents are luxuriously appointed, with en suite bathrooms and open air hot-water showers. The camp has its own swimming pool, enabling guests to cool off in the heat of the day.

The new swimming pool is due to be completed in early 2002 and has commanding views across the game rich hills behind the lodge. At night relax in the snug, the perfect place for stargazers to observe the pristine night sky and experience the sounds of the bush. As the largest reserve in Africa at 55,000 sqkm, Selous can justifiably claim to offer unparalleled wilderness. Located in southern Tanzania, it is home to the largest populations of some of Africa?s most sought after game including elephant, lion, wild dog, leopard, buffalo, hippo, crocodile and herds of plains game, yet it remains one of the least visited of the great game sanctuaries on the continent. Full day game drives inside the reserve in 4x4 vehicles from Sable Mountain Lodge often do not pass a single other vehicle, since the North-West sector of the reserve is far away from the busier routes in the East.

Grumeti

Mwanza, Lake Victoria:
In the untouched seclusion of a remote, idyllic valley in the western corridor of the Serengeti National Park, 50km east of Lake Victoria, lies the tented Grumeti River Camp. Flanked by two hillsides, this blissful camp nestles beneath tall riverine trees on the banks of an oxbow tributary of the Grumeti River. It is one of the wildest and most remote camps in Africa's greatest wildlife sanctuary, the Serengeti. Life under canvas enchanted early visitors. Every year during the great migration, wildebeest, zebra and other herbivores plunge into the Grumeti River, risking the jaws of some of the largest crocodiles on earth. Crocodiles came under the spotlight here when filmmaker Alan Root used the camp as a base for filming the story of the crocodile, 'There are Dragons'. Another film, 'Serengeti Shall Not Die', is an inspired tribute to the national park. Intimate and distinctive, Grumeti River Camp takes its name from the river running next to the camp. The friendliness of the people who live and work here makes for a truly African welcome. At Grumeti, some of the world's largest hippos greet you through watery carpets of lilies. Black-and-white colobus monkeys (guereza) with their spectacular pied coats flash through the bird-filled riverine trees, and the area boasts one of the highest densities of cheetah in Africa. We invite you to go on intrepid expeditions in Land Rovers into the wild Serengeti, take a relaxing walking safari along the river, enjoy bird-watching or experience a trip to Lake Victoria, the biggest lake in Africa. At night, the wild pulse of Africa thumps to the nocturnal tunes of owls, bats and galagos (bushbabies). The haunting primeval calls of hyena, leopard and lion echo through the shadowy branches. Tented Accommodation: Entering the cream and ivory canvas tent, you will be delighted by the sight of the room's grand centrepiece - a colourfully adorned bed dramatically offset by a lavish wooden headboard, styled to resemble a regal crown. Vast and expansive, these beds are made of Tanzanian cypress. Intimate and distinctive, Grumeti has just ten spacious tents with en suite bathrooms and showers open to the sun and stars. Each flamboyant tent perches on a raised platform. At night you will lie under the cool shade of African thatch grass, stirred by ceiling fans. The high-roofed tents are lined with hand-sculpted African finishes, hand-blown Kenyan glassware and the unexpected colours of bright lime, scarlet, bronze, orange and crimson. Ensconced in accommodation fit for royalty, you can gaze out over the riverbanks and hippo pools. The d?cor of the shared living spaces is funky, with unusual beaded antique artefacts.
