The Retreat is a unique refuge overlooking the spectacular Mukutan Gorge on the edge of the Great Rift Valley in Kenya. It is situated on the extreme west of the region of Laikipia, the gem of the East African Highlands, on the ranch of Ol Ari Nyiro. Ol Ari Nyiro - The place of Dark Waters in Maasai language - is a 100,000 acre ranch where conservationist and author Kuki Gallmann's haunting autobiography, 'I Dreamed of Africa,' is based. Guided Walks, Game Drives, Horseback Riding, Camel Rides, Swimming, Picnics, Fishing, Bird Watching. Three separate large cottages, with a spacious central building provide private, luxurious and romantic accommodation for up to six people. Built in elegant, traditional style using local stone, papyrus and native woods, each cottage is original and different in decoration and layout. All rooms have a double fireplace, with open private verandahs, spacious bathrooms and double beds. Throughout the Retreat Swahili and Lamu furniture features prominently, supported by pieces hand hewn by local craftsmen. An oasis of breathtaking beauty where wildlife dwells undisturbed, Ol Ari Nyiro is renowned for the variety of its landscapes, from open savannah to steep gorges, endless vistas of hills covered in wild sage and thorn trees; for its herds of elephant, buffalo, antelope and its many lions. The ranch is sanctuary to the largest known population of undisturbed indigenous black rhino outside National Parks. Mukutan means 'The Meeting and it is here that the fingers of the surrounding hills meet. The Retreat is perched on the cliffs overlooking the gorge, its waterfalls, palm trees and extraordinary thermal hot springs. This is one of Kenya's oldest farms, situated in the spectacular Great Rift Valley on the shores of Lake Naivasha and within easy reach of the capital, Nairobi. A stunning tented camp initially for 12 people, set on the breathtaking Great Rift Valley views, on the slopes and hills where the film 'I Dreamed of Africa' based on Kuki Gallmann's world best seller was shot here on location. The area, known locally as Kurmakini, is situated on Ol ari Nyiro, a 100,000 acre malaria free, private paradise and wildlife reserve and a Black Rhino sanctuary. Guided Walks, Camel Walks, Game Viewing, Game Tracking, Bird Walks, Bird Watching, Day Trips, Horse Riding, Fishing. Six enormous tents, three with two large queen beds each, and three with romantic four-poster beds, are sheltered by a sloping tent-like roof and erected on red cedar terraces. They all have private panoramic verandahs overlooking the Great Rift, where intimate meals can be served. Each tent has a vast dressing room/bathroom, and shower en suite and its own massage bed. Built in a unique and exclusive design in beige canvas to blend with the landscape, finished as an Arabis desert tent, they are decorated in an unsual imaginative style - with the meticulous care for detail that has made the Mukutan Retreat famous - creating a special, luxurious yet relaxed and extremely comfortable atmosphere. A central large reception area with two giant fireplaces, vast front terrace where a fire is lit every night for a stunning campfire effect, dining rooms and bar, a shop with a selection of rare local crafts, a panoramic swimming pool, and secluded viewpoints amongst clumps of trees for sundowners, meditation, yoga and relaxation are all part of the layout.
