Phalaborwa: was once inhabited only by wild life (lions, elephants, leopards, buffalo) is currently the only town right on the border of Kruger National Park. The town, which is home to 30 000 people, is known for its excellent semi-tropical climate with sunshine all year round. It is a tourist destination the world over and offers: Hans Merensky Golfing Estate (is 2km from Uncle Tom's Guest House) - play 19 holes on Hans Merensky's championship golf course while giving way to wildlife. Top grade caddies and a large garage of electric caddy carts are available. The Gateway Airport in Phalaborwa receives 3 daily scheduled flights from to and from Johannesburg International (1 hour flight), morning, midday and evening. An alternative is to fly from Johannesburg International Airport to Eastgate Airport in Hoedspruit, hire a vehicle and drive the 80 km route to Phalaborwa whilst visiting the attractions along your way. The Masorini heritage site close to the Phalaborwa gate was once inhabited by a group of the Ba-Phalaborwa people who made a living by manufacturing and selling iron artefacts during the Iron Age. This is an archaeological site situated in the Kruger Park, approx. 11km from the Phalaborwa gate. Ancient copper smelting, working tools and lots more are to be seen on this rocky hill. There were old shafts and stopes from which ore had been mined and extracted thousands of years ago. In local legend it was from these shafts that iron had come from and beaten into spears and primitive agricultural implements, and were used as a means of exchange among the locals.Pilgrim?s Rest. This historical gold panning town, with many of the original buildings still intact, is only 2 hour?s drive away. Other places worth visiting in the surrounding areas include: Buffalo Project, Mac Mac Pools, Graskop Gorge Swing, God?s Window, Three Rondavels, Bourke's Luck Potholes, Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, White Lions of the Timbavati, Cheetah Project. View the largest man-made hole at Phalaborwa Mining Company: more than twice as deep as the Kimberly hole, the bottom of the pit being 500m below sea level. Amarula Lapa. Sap from the Marula fruit gets extracted here for making Amarula Crème Liquor.
